A Life With Child - Part I: Conception

My first child, my spirited little girl, whom I will call “Starlight” here, is 14 months old. As someone once said regarding the raising of children: “The days are long but the years are short.” So before further delay I want to document the story of how she came into this world. It begins almost 2 years ago...

Hubby and I discovered we were expecting for the first time at the beginning of December 2017. It was just after the death of our fur baby (actually a senior cat), a family member’s baby shower and confirmed by my doctor on the Feast of the Immulate Conception, December 8th. Life and babies were certainly on my mind.

The funny thing is that we had been trying for some months and I was getting discouraged. We used the Creighton Method of Natural Family Planning. I had started to use it before we were married, because a hormone imbalance was negetively affecting my mental health. All this to say, we knew the method well and used it precisely. I knew when I was fertile and when I wasn’t. Yet months passed without that second blue line on the home stick test.

Looking back God must of had a plan. I had been working a very stressful job and struggling with seasonal depression the winter/spring before. Lots of prayer led me to a job change and not trying so hard to conceive. After all the cycles of scrutinizing the signs and overthinking every little thing, it finally happened when we let go a little and we didn’t expect so much.

I think there is a life lesson in there somewhere... “Let go and let God.”

God’s timing is really quite something. Besides the less stressful job, including better (read: not so early and more flexible) hours, and the Immulate Conception confirmation date, my early pregnancy was during Advent and so I journeyed alongside Our Lady. What a lesson in trust it turned out to be....
